Eureka Childcare:
An Overview
In 2021 Eureka was born as a product of the passion of a childcare provider. Promising a safe, warm, loving environment for children where they can learn and grow physically, emotionally, creatively, intellectually, and socially at their own pace. We want to help every child increase their confidence, and self-esteem by treating them as unique individuals, and allowing them to express themselves in a variety of facets. We strive to make your child’s time at day home the best experience it can be for them as well as you, the parents. Based on the Constructivism approach and the Flight Framework, Eureka promotes direct sensory interaction with the children’s environment (experiential) and encourages reflection on the events (construction of knowledge). This leads to creating a learning environment where the children love to learn.
A day-home is the combination of bringing the best of daycare into the day home environment where children live each day enjoying amazing and wonderful experiences whilst developing and learning in a safe environment. Eureka aims to develop the following key abilities:
• The ability to think
• The ability to feel and express
• The ability to love
Playing and learning or learning through play is a foundation of the Eureka’s Curriculum based on Flight framework. In each of our learning spaces we offer a varied platform of activities with a priority to making the children feel comfortable, safe and happy whilst developing essential capabilities.
Our Curriculum aims to promote consistent delivery with the ability for day home providers to cater to the individual needs of each and every Eurekas’ client.

Hours of Operation
Hours of operation are: 7:00 am – 5:30 PM: Monday – Friday
Day homes are closed on Stat Holidays and one week in December.
(NOTE: you will receive a calendar with your registration package).
Late pick-up policy:
If you are late picking up (after closing time) your child you will be charged a late fee of $1 per minute or any part thereof, except in emergency situations. This late fee must be paid in cash to the daycare provided on duty upon pick-up of your child.
Payment Procedures
Forms of payment currently accepted are directly EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer). For your childcare payment the amount indicated on your contract will be debited from the account indicated by you through the PAD Agreement. The payments will come out of your account on the first business day of the month. Your first month’s payment will be debited from your account to secure your place, even if you decide to forego child care with Eureka.
Please note: a "Not Sufficient Funds" is subject to a $45 Administration Fee.
Signing in and out/Attendance Records Policy
Children are signed in and out by staff members upon their arrival and departure. We ask that if your child is not going to attend care as per usual that you inform the day home by 9 am. This will help us plan meals and activities for the day. Also, we ask that when your child does not attend day home due to a communicable illness you inform us as we are required to record this for the safety of others. If no one answers the phone please leave a brief message.
For safety reasons, if someone other than yourself, a known parent/guardian, will be picking up your child please let staff know upon arrival. Photo ID will be required by said person if the staff member is not familiar with that person as children will not be released to unauthorized individuals.
If someone shows up to pick up your child on your behalf and a staff member was not made aware of it, we will have to track you down to confirm that this is in fact permitted, as well as see a photo ID of that individual to confirm their identity.

Absences/Exclusion from Day home
Given the small group sizes of our day homes, the chance of infection is much higher and we all need to be very careful. Our goal is to keep the premises as safe as possible for everyone.
If a child is too sick to attend daycare, please keep him/her home. There is no “sick room” at the day homes and the best place for a child to be recuperating from an illness is at home. We understand it is difficult for parents to be absent from work but ask that this rule be respected.
If your child experiences any of the following symptoms or illnesses please keep them home until they are recovered:
If your child(ren) are sent to day home with any of the above listed symptoms or develop during the day they will be sent home. Children should NEVER be medicated and then sent to daycare (i.e. given Tylenol to break fever). You should arrange for back-up care when your child is sick. Unfortunately, there are no refunds or discounts for days that your child does not attend daycare and there are still fixed daily costs associated with each childcare spot that cannot be avoided if your child is not in attendance.
If your child will not be attending the day home due to illness or any other reason, please advise Eureka as soon as possible, as well as the reason they will not be attending. This will prevent activities from being delayed and it also helps us know how many children we need to prepare meals for, etc.

- Difficulty breathing or untreated wheezing.
- Yellow discharge from the eyes.
- An unusual yellow coloring of the skin or eyes.

Clothing Code
Children should come dressed in comfortable, season appropriate clothing that could get dirty as some activities can be messy. A spare change of clothes is required for all children in case of soiling of clothes. Children under the age of 3, and those who are potty-training require at least two changes of clothing (including socks). We want to keep your children happy and comfortable.
A separate set of indoor shoes is also required for the daycare for each child at all times. Public Health requires that feet are required to remain covered at ALL times when indoors. These “indoor shoes” can simply be a pair of crocs from the dollar store or a pair of slippers that they don’t use at home, even a separate set of sneakers if you wish.
Please also remember whenever the weather permits the children are taken outside for 1-2 hours per day. Please ensure that you have proper outerwear provided for your child so that they are comfortable and don’t miss out on outdoor play. If a child does not have proper outdoor apparel they will have to remain indoors. This happens all too often in the winter time because of a lack of snow pants, hats and mitts. Please leave an extra pair of these items with us if you can or be sure to bring them every day.
Items from Home
Nap Bedding –Parents provide the crib sheet/blanket that they sleep on, as well a blanket for them to cover up with, as well as any comfort items that they may need to sleep (blanket, sookie, etc.)
Weather appropriate clothing - Jacket/splash/snow pants/hats/mitts, boots etc. A lack of weather appropriate clothing will prevent your child from enjoying our outdoor play time, please ensure you dress your child for outdoor play every day.
Please ensure that children come dressed in “play” clothes. Although we are careful while doing art and playing outside; there are instances where clothes could become dirty and stained. We appreciate your understanding and so do the children. Extra supplies can be left at the day home and replenished when necessary.
Children are welcome to bring toys from home to the day home but we ask that it be limited to one toy a day and it must fit in their allotted cubby space. Children will be asked to share these toys from home with the other children. If a child does not wish to share his/her it will be put away for them until they feel like sharing. The only toys not allowed at the day home are play guns and weapons. Thank you for your understanding.

Snack and Meal Times
Our meals are unique because we use family style dining. All food is placed in serving bowls on the table and children are encouraged to serve themselves or serve themselves with help from an adult. The adult child caregivers sit at the table with the children. Children and child care givers practice good manners in a pleasant mealtime setting.
Children can learn and practice many social skills, such as taking turns, passing food to others, saying please and thank you, and helping to set the table. Children can serve themselves with carefully chosen serving dishes. Bowls with wide lips are most easily handled by young children. Plastic serving bowls are light weight and don’t conduct heat. Children often want to try new foods when they see the other children and adults eating them. Children enjoy eating with adults and practicing good table manners.
All snacks and meals will be prepared by the day home provider according to the posted menu. Any food allergies or dietary concerns will be adhered to strictly, please note any posting of allergies of other children so that if you ever send food with your child that you can adhere to them as well. Parents of children with dietary concerns/allergies may be required to provide supplemental food and/or drink for their child if it is not feasible to supply appropriate foods and/or drinks (i.e. if your child is vegetarian you must provide some protein portions of their meals). Most of the time we are able to accommodate your needs.
At all times during drinking and eating, children are required to be seated and not engaged in any play activity. This is to ensure safety (to avoid choking) and to promote healthy eating/drinking habits. Under no circumstances will young children be allowed to walk around or play with bottles in their mouths. Pacifiers are encouraged for use at nap time only and if your child requires a bottle at nap it will be given to him/her before they get into bed. Under no circumstances will children be allowed to go to sleep with bottles in bed. This is also to ensure safety (prevent choking) and to prevent dental problems.

If the parents/guardians can’t be reached the alternate emergency contact person will be called to come pick up the child. Allergy related and common cold symptoms as well as non communicable diseases/illnesses do not require that the child be excluded from care.
If any of the following conditions are present, it is required that children be excluded from care: children may return to care when they are free of symptoms or are approved to return by the facility operator or in some extreme cases, by a medical doctor.
***Parents are required to inform staff of any serious illness or communicable /contagious disease (with their child or within their family) within 24 hours to allow other families within the day home to be alerted.
Potty Training Policies
We strive to support your efforts of potty training at home right through the day here at the day home. The key signs of readiness for potty training include:
• The child is able to pull down and up their pants and underwear/pull-ups on their own with little or no assistance
• The child is able to communicate to you when they need to go to the bathroom
• The child’s diaper is dry after nap times and for long periods during the day
• The child is able to hold their bowels and bladder until they get to the potty once they realize that they need to go
If these signs are not present, your child is not ready to potty train at a day home as we cannot have a potty in each room for them to use; it is against public health sanitation policies. We will always encourage children to use the potty regularly and we begin to introduce sitting on the potty at 2 years old. When your child does potty train, we ask that you provide extra clothing and remove soiled clothing daily.

Discipline Policy
At Eureka we believe that children thrive in an environment that is secure, predictable, nurturing and supportive. We believe it is important to set realistic expectations and limits for young children to ensure the safety of each child; the protection of his/her rights and those of other and the protection of property.
When a child exceeds the limits we guide in a manner that is firm, positive and still maintains the child’s self-respect. Sometimes experiencing the consequences of his/her actions can be a learning experience for a child. Giving choices or redirection when a child’s behaviour is inappropriate can be used to avoid uncontrollable misbehaviour. We will strive to help the children solve their own problems. We acknowledge the child’s feelings and help him/her to be considerate of the feelings of others.
Discipline is something adults do with and for children, rather than something they do to children. The intention is to help children become self-disciplined as they learn appropriate and acceptable behaviour.
We will accomplish this by:
Note: We do not practice corporal punishment (slapping, shaking, spanking, etc.). We believe in a positive approach to child rearing. We do not humiliate, confine or deprive children from meals, snacks or toilet uses as a form of discipline.

We will accomplish this by:
- Following a flexible routine so that children gain trust and security
- Providing a variety of toys, which will stimulate cognitive, physical and emotional growth. The toys will be rotated monthly
- Approaching children individually, establishing eye contact and using a calm controlled voice
- Recognizing a child’s feelings before discussing behavioural limits
- Focusing on the child’s behaviour rather than the child
- Ignoring minor incidents
- Discussing acceptable behaviour and setting limits at a level children understand
- Using positive reinforcement in words and actions, focusing on what to do rather than what not to do
- Encouraging caring and cooperative relationships
- Allowing children to make choices where applicable
- Reminding children of limits, as they have short memories and are easily distracted.
- Diverting a child’s interest when necessary
- Assisting children to solve problems
- Giving a warning cue that will indicate a coming change in activities
- Using logical consequences (ex if a child spills milk he/she will be expected to wipe it up.)
- Removing offending toys when necessary
Note: We do not practice corporal punishment (slapping, shaking, spanking, etc.). We believe in a positive approach to child rearing. We do not humiliate, confine or deprive children from meals, snacks or toilet uses as a form of discipline.

Communication
If you need to contact the day home for any reason, please feel free to phone. If you get our voice mail please do leave a message as quite often day home providers are out or busy with the children and are unable to get to the phone at that moment. We do not mind calls to check to see how your children are doing during the day. We do please ask to limit them to 2 per day, as they do disrupt the routine to pull a day home provider out to speak on the phone. Thank you for your understanding.
If you call outside of day home hours please leave a detailed message. Someone will return your call at our earliest convenience. We highly encourage parents to email: [email protected] directly.

Drop In (Terms and Conditions)
By booking a drop in day I am agreeing to the following terms and conditions:
- All drop in is subject to availability and must be booked and confirmed through the registrar and NOT by the dayhome care provider.
- If you wish to cancel or re-schedule a drop-in, notice must be given to our registrar in writing (email) 72 hours prior to the drop in day date. 16
- f you do not attend a scheduled drop in day and the required notice of the cancellation has not been given, it will be considered as a “redeemed” drop in (or charged if you pay individually for the days).
- As our drop in days are subject to availability, priority will be given to new clients looking for regular scheduled days over drop in days. Eureka reserves the right to cancel and/or reschedule requested drop in days, or change the location of the drop in day. Eureka will provide 2 weeks’ notice of a cancellation (in writing via email) or 1 week notice (in writing via email) if changing location of the drop in. If a client is not happy with the proposed change in location then the drop in day can be rescheduled at no extra cost and the notice period for parents to cancel would be waived under these unusual circumstances.

Withdrawal of Services Policy
A MINIMUM OF TWO (2) CALENDAR MONTHS WRITTEN NOTICE is required for termination of fulltime childcare services. Even if your child does not attend during that two month period, payment is still required. Any fees not paid on time with regards to termination of child care services will also be subject to daily late fees, until full payment is received. In the event of any concerns (raised by staff, parents/guardians or even children) a meeting can be scheduled to address the issues. The meeting will involve the owner/operator, any involved staff members and the parents/guardians involved. The concerns will be clearly stated (ex. late payment, failure to adhere to day home policies, behavioral problems etc.) and discussed. Meeting minutes will be taken and solutions will be sought in a non-judgmental manner. A plan will be designed to resolve the issue. A second meeting will be scheduled to review the situation within a reasonable time frame. In the event the issue cannot be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction, a two month notice written notice of termination of services will be given.
